How can I make my password stronger?

To maximize the security of your Adams tax accounts, follow IRS guidance for creating a strong password.

  • Use word phrases that are easy to remember rather than random letters, characters and numbers. By using a phrase, you may remember your password better.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for all accounts, whether it’s to access a device, tax software products, cloud storage, wireless networks or encryption technology.
  • Use a minimum of eight characters; longer is better. Avoid personal information or common passwords.
  • Don’t reuse passwords. For example, changing Bgood!17 to Bgood!18 isn’t a recommended practice.
  • Store your password list in a secure location such as a safe or locked file cabinet. Or, use a password manager program to track passwords, but protect it with (you guessed it) a strong password.
  • Don’t disclose passwords to anyone for any reason.

1099 NEC Nonemployee Compensation

What is the 1099-NEC?

Starting in 2020, IRS Form 1099-NEC replaces box 7 on the 1099-MISC.

That means businesses can no longer report nonemployee compensation on the 1099-MISC form.

Instead, you’ll need new IRS Form 1099-NEC to report your small businesses nonemployee compensation for the 2020 tax season.

I used the 1099-MISC last year. Will I need to file a 1099-NEC now?

Adams Tax Forms estimates that most of our 1099-MISC filers will need to use a 1099-NEC this year.

  • If you used Box 7 to report nonemployee compensation last year, you’ll need to grab the 1099-NEC tax forms to report these nonemployee income payments this year.
  • If you used Box 7 of the 1099-MISC last year, and you also used other box numbers to report other types of payments, you may need BOTH forms for the same recipient this year.
  • If you didn’t use 1099-MISC Box 7 last year, you’ll need the revised 1099-MISC for 2020. Look at the form closely—box numbers have been shuffled and the form has been completely redesigned for 2020.

See The New 1099 NEC to get your small business up to speed on this massive change to 1099 filing.

Can I get an automatic extension on filing the 1099-NEC?

No, you cannot. There is no automatic 30-day filing extension for the NEC.

The 1099-NEC will typically be due on January 31 each year. For 2020 tax returns, that date falls on a Sunday, so the deadline will be February 1, 2021.

A one-time 30-day extension is only available under one of four hardship conditions, by submitting a written request to the IRS.

Acceptable reasons for a one-time extension include:

  • Your operation was affected by the death, serious illness or unavoidable absence of the person responsible for filing information returns.
  • Your company was affected by fire, casualty or natural disaster.
  • Your company was “in the first year of establishment.”
  • Your company didn’t receive data on a payee statement such as a Schedule K-1, Form 1042-S, or the statement of sick pay required under IRS regulations, in time to prepare an accurate information return.

What are the penalties for filing 1099-NEC late or for not filing?

Not providing a correct 1099 Form at all (intentional disregard) carries a penalty of $560 per 1099, with no maximum for the year.

Filing a mandatory 1099 form late could lead to penalties ranging from $50 to $280 per 1099, with a maximum of $1,130,500 a year for your small business.

The IRS considers you a small business if you made $5 million or less in average annual revenues for each of the past 3 years.

Late penalties vary based on just how late your information return will be:

Within 30 Days of Due Date
$50 per 1099, maximum penalty of $197,500

More Than 30 Days Past the Due Date
$110 per 1099 by August 1; maximum penalty of $565,000
$280 per 1099, if you file after August 1; maximum penalty of $1,130,500

How can I get the best alignment when printing tax forms?

This year we’ve revised our printing guidelines to help Tax Forms Helper Online users print beautifully aligned forms with less effort from Adobe Reader.

To print, simply select Adobe PDF as your printer in the Print dialog box instead of your web browser.

  • Set page scaling to None
  • In the Print dialog box, check Auto-rotate and Center
  • In Page Sizing & Handling, check Choose paper source by PDF paper size

Before you begin printing, make sure you’ve installed the most recent version of Adobe Reader -- available for free from Adobe’s website.

Can I print tax forms from Tax Forms Helper® Online onto plain paper and send them to the IRS or Social Security Administration (SSA)?

If you plan to mail your taxes to the IRS or SSA, you must send scannable forms with Flint red OCR dropout ink for your Copy A forms and your accompanying summary transmittals. You may face delays and penalties for sending plain ink copies to federal agencies.
